Consumption of Hemp Seeds

On December 24, 2022 by Miriam Delorenzo

Superfoods are foods that contain high concentrations of nutrients essential for life and human activity. These foods have a beneficial effect on health, among the list of the most valued superfoods are hemp seeds.

Our beloved hemp plant surprises us again with its extraordinary properties, in this case by the fortifying power of hemp seeds as a superfood. As Hippocrates, physician of Ancient Greece and for many “father of medicine” said: Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. In the case of hemp seeds, this principle is fully applicable.

Hemp seeds as a superfood

Hemp seeds are a superfood with an exceptional nutritional contribution, as they contain all the main amino acids and essential fatty acids for the body, being also a rich source of fiber, proteins, and minerals. Ingested as a regular food, it will bring vitality to our daily life and will strengthen the body’s immune response, protecting us from viruses and bacteria.

Among the hemp edibles, this is perhaps the most prestigious among the general public. The consumption of hemp seeds is widespread among athletes due to their high energy intake. It is also very popular among people who follow vegan or vegetarian eating habits since hemp seeds are a vegetable protein with a high caloric-energy intake.

Nutritional properties and benefits of hemp seeds

It should be remembered that hemp seeds do not contain THC or any type of cannabinoid. Consuming hemp seeds in food does not have any psychoactive effect, so its consumption only makes sense if it is as food.

As we have already said, hemp seeds are distinguished as food because they are rich in nutrients needed by the body to function in optimal conditions. Its energetic contribution is spectacular, 100 grams of hemp seeds provide about 560 kilocalories.

Its high concentration of fiber, soluble and insoluble, makes hemp seeds an ideal food to combat intestinal disorders. In addition to its probiotic properties, the fiber in the seeds helps to maintain blood sugar levels, and reduce cholesterol, and is a good food supplement in weight loss diets, as it is very satiating. This fiber is found in the shell of the seed and has a percentage of 28%, about 28g of fiber per 100g of seeds.

42% of the hemp seed is pure vegetable protein, containing 20 amino acids among which are all the major amino acids. It is especially rich in BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) leucine, isoleucine, and valine, amino acids that play a very important role in protein synthesis. This nutritional factor favors the regeneration and maintenance of muscle mass.

Hemp seeds contain most of the minerals that the organism requires in a greater quantity, these are; calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, and magnesium. Minerals are essential micronutrients that, among many other things, help to maintain strong and healthy bones. Another important source of hemp seeds is the essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6. These fatty acids strengthen the cardiovascular system and support the proper functioning of the nervous system. Thanks to this concentration of essential fatty acids, hemp seeds also have anti-inflammatory properties, so it is advisable to add them to the diet in case of arthritis, muscle problems, or menstrual cramps.
